How to get the most out of unwanted gifts!
We’ve all unwrapped a gift and had that sinking feeling. Christmas should be – and in many cases is – about spending quality time with family, not about getting presents. But when present-giving has become such a large part of proceedings, it’s hard not to get excited – or disappointed – when you unwrap those festive parcels.
So what can you do when you get something you don’t like?
Well, first of all, most shops now offer gift receipts, which allow you to return an item or exchange it without finding out how much it cost. These are a godsend when you have teenagers to buy for.
If you don’t want to ask the giver for the receipt, however (and we understand it can be tricky) most stores will offer an exchange even without the receipt. The downside to this is that they’ll only offer an exchange at the current retail value – which, if your present has gone into the sales, means you’ll get less money back than was originally paid.
A third alternative is to set it aside for next year. It’s surprising how many Christmas gifts are recycled for next year. Soaps are particularly popular, and are ideal for kids or distant relatives. Candles are also great bottom-drawer gifts, along with jewellery that doesn’t suit you. You don’t even need to wait until next Christmas – most festive presents are also great for birthdays, especially ones you’ve forgotten!
Failing all that, you can do a present-swap. This can be with a family member or friend (as long as it’s not the person who gave you the present in the first place!). Simply cobble together any presents you don’t like, get your friend to do the same, and then have a gander at their goods. If you both see something you like, swap!
Finally, as a last resort, you can always do your good deed for the festive season and donate any truly unwanted gifts to charity shops, who can sell them on and raise valuable money for people in need.

We all know what Boxing Day heralds: the beginning of the now-inaptly named January sales. These are the biggest sales of the entire year, with nearly every shop in the high street offering huge discounts on autumn/winter clothing and Christmas stock. For the procrastinators among us, it’s the perfect time for picking up next year’s presents; for the rest of us, it’s a time to indulge in a few cut-price treats.
So with the sales well and truly underway here are some hot sales to look out for this year at Boots, Debenhams (whose Blue Cross sales are always a dream after the party season) and Next. Every girl dreams of marrying a prince at some point in her life, and for Kate Middleton that dream is about to come true. On April 29th 2011, she will walk up the aisle at Westminster Abbey to take her place beside her husband-to-be, HRH Prince William. It’s been a proposal nine years in the making, with the couple sharing ups and downs, a brief split and a reunion that reaffirmed both their beliefs that this was indeed the right decision to make.
For William, the decision can’t have been easy. It’s clear to anyone who sees the couple together that they’re deeply in love, but memories of his parents’ own failed marriage will have weighed heavily in his thoughts. It was for this very reason that the couple waited so long before taking the plunge.
They’ve both enjoyed the added bonus of living together for some years at their home on Anglesey, a luxury that no previous generations of the Royal family have been allowed.
But for Kate, the pressure is even worse. Not only does she have to consider the implications of being married to royalty – the Windsors have always had a rocky relationship with British media – she also has to face the probability of one day becoming the Queen of England. It’s a hard act to follow.
The biggest news story, though, has to be the ring. 18-carat sapphire and diamond on a platinum band, it is the engagement ring given by HRH Prince Charles to William’s mother, Diana. William said it was his way of making sure his mother was a part of the occasion – a touching gesture from the future King.
With the wedding date set for the 29th April 2011 – now a public holiday in honour of the occasion – the whole world is waiting to see what the wedding of one of England’s favourite royals will bring.

The Date: Sadly, it’s not possible for Joe Bloggs (or Josephine, for that matter) to get married in Westminster Abbey like the happy royal couple, but you can still share your special day with them in spirit. Bookings for weddings on Friday the 29th April 2011 have shot up since the engagement announcement, and the creation of a public holiday has only made the date even more popular, as all guests are now (ostensibly) available to attend. However, all this excitement has pushed prices for venues up by almost double in some places, especially larger venues such as city cathedrals. Get in quick if you want your big day to coincide with William and Kate’s grand union.
This year’s autumn/winter collection has reflected the growing emphasis on warmth and comfort, especially given the unseasonably chilly temperatures we’ve been experiencing. Furry gilets, warm woollen coats and cosy toe-curling boots are all the rage, with woody, smoky colours providing that extra touch of warmth. Think log cabins, crackling fires and roasted chestnuts – Last Christmas, without the 80′s haircuts.
A key item this season is, of course, a pair of aviator boots (or several!) in a variety of earthy colours. Tan, brown and black are the most versatile shades, and all that fur lining ensures your toes stay twinkling 24/7. Hot spots for buying aviators are Dune, for top-end quality; Next, for affordable style; and New Look, for pretty practicality.
They also match perfectly with the aviator jackets that shops like Dorothy Perkins, Next and Debenhams are flaunting – though be sure to vary your colours. The bulky nature of aviator jackets don’t suit every figure – curvier women could find themselves resembling the bear rather than the huntress – but as a general rule, these jackets are a pretty good investment, with potential right through winter and into spring. 
With all the cold weather, it makes sense for one of this year’s hottest looks to be layers. From vests, jumpers, gilets and coats to leggings, skinny jeans, woollen socks and chunky boots, it’s all about layering your look. Team a plain long-sleeved polo neck with a gilet for instant style, or a knitted vest over a loose blouse for chic winter warmth. Winter is when skinny jeans come into their own – perfect for slipping on a pair of combat boots or fashion wellies – and leggings have come back into fashion just at the right time to add a layer of warmth as well as style to any outfit.
The colour themes for 2010 are pretty adaptable, and flattering to most, if not all, skin tones. Camel is the big trend, with gold and cream variations giving a depth and intensity to a look that could so easily have fallen into the “beige” trap. Thankfully, a shot of emperor purple rescues the camel colour palette from the brink. Despite being an unusual combination, these two tones work fantastically together.
Other major colours to stock up on are chocolate browns, tans and of course black, that winter staple. Reds are still right up there, lending a festive hint to proceedings, and look great teamed with either brown or black, as well as with the many metallic tones that are seeping through into the festive fashion parade. Golds, browns and silvers are the biggest hits for 2010, with sequins making a small but forceful comeback from last year. Metallics are especially good for footwear, giving a hint of bling without overwhelming onlookers.
