Liposuction

Liposuction or liposculpture as it is sometimes referred to, involves the removal of localised fat deposits. It can be used to contour the body and give you a better shape.

The removal of fat is carried out by the insertion of a tube called a cannula through a small incision in the area to be treated. The cannula is pushed and pulled through the fat layer breaking it up and vacuuming it out. The procedure normally takes between 1 and 2 hours depending on the number of areas to be treated. It can be done with either a local anaesthetic or a general. Where a lot of areas are to be treated in one go, it is usual to have a general anaesthetic.

During the removal of fat, fluid from the body is also removed, it is important that this fluid is replaced both during and immediately after surgery using an intravenous drip. The procedure is normally done as a day case and does not involve a stay in hospital unless done with other procedures. Localised bruising and swelling will occur in the treated areas and a small spot sized scar will result where the cannulla is inserted. This will fade away until it is almost invisible and the bruising and swelling will go down over a two to three week period.

A supporting body suit is worn for the first two to three weeks which can be hot and uncomfortable but it is important that this is worn to give you the best result. Light exercise can be done after two to three weeks dependant on how much fat has been removed. You can usually return to work after two to three days and any pain or discomfort should be easily controlled with pain killers.

The side effects of Liposuction can be dizziness due to loss of fluids, swelling that does not go down for a number of weeks after surgery, infection, embolism when the loosened fat enters a broken blood vessel, numbness in the area’s treated, waviness or dimpling of the skin, loosening of the skin. Side effects are rare but you may experience one or more of them and if you are having a general anaesthetic you also need to be aware of the risks associated with this or in fact any other operation.

Cost of Liposuction

The cost of liposuction will depend on how many areas you are having treated and is typically between £1500-£5,000 depending on the surgeon and hospital that you choose.
