Hands

Hands are probably one of the most abused parts of our bodies, second only to our feet. Think about it: you do everything with them. We cook, clean, wash and work with them. They're constantly in close proximity to sharp knives and chemicals at home, or else battling the elements outdoors.

Bearing this in mind, then, it seems obvious that we should treat them with care and respect. Care means keeping them clean and moisturised, because it's surprising how quickly hands can dry out. Respect means listening to your hands when they tell you it hurts to do something. If lifting a box is killing your wrist or your thumb, get someone else to do it. It's surprising how often we need our hands, and if they're out of action, that kind of limits your scope of activities.

If you want detailed info on hand care, look at our skincare tips: they cover much the same advice. But to help you get started, we've put a few key hints below:

  • Moisturise regularly. This means at least twice a day, morning and night. Hand creams are the best, and not too expensive, although technically any moisturiser will do.
  • Protect your hands. If it's cold, wear gloves; if it's sunny, remember to put sun cream on your hands as well as the rest of you.
  • Exercise your hands. Most people don't think to exercise their hands - after all, it's not often hands need to tone up or lose weight. But stretching them a few times a day, especially if you work at a computer, keeps your joints supple and stops your muscles cramping up from all that typing.

Magic.
