Nail TLC

If you've succeeded in growing lovely, long, neat nails, you'll understand the frustration that a broken nail causes. Not only does it (occasionally) hurt, but it completely ruins the orderly shape that you painstakingly filed your nails to suit. You can either leave it and suffer in silence, or file them all that short and spend the rest of the night sobbing quietly into your bowl of soup.

But now there's a third option:  nail strengthener. A miraculous little bottle that turns even the most brittle into super-tough nails of steel. They're not expensive, and the majority of high street beauty shops will stock one brand or another. Of course, the best brand generally is Sally Hensen's magical range of nail care products, all of which tend to guarantee results in a ridiculously short space of time, cause you to snort with derision in the store (earning a few odd looks) and then make you eat your words by actually producing the goods, dammit.

Of course, no product can stop nails from breaking completely. There will always be some kind of manual labour that will cause one nail to snap under the pressure and have a nail's version of a nervous breakdown. This is usually nature's way of telling you that operating a pneumatic drill is not a valid career choice.

But for anything less strenuous, strengthening varnishes are usually up to the job.
