Child Birth

The first thing you always want to know is the due date that your baby will be born. Don’t be fooled though, babies arrive when they are ready it’s perfectly normal to go two weeks either side of your due date. Many babies arrive much earlier than expected so it is best to be organised and have your bag packed well in advance.

Most of us like to think we are organised enough to make a birth plan, beware, it is fine to think that you will plan how you will deliver, what drugs you will want, but everyone is different and everyone copes with pain in different ways so don’t hold to your plan at the risk of being uncomfortable. At the time you will want to have the flexibility to change your mind.

Hospital births are the most common, they are the safest way to give birth, you have the medical care, and equipment at the ready should the worse happen, however, it is your choice, many people give birth at home with no problems. Being relaxed and in your own home can be an awesome experience for the whole family.

Home births can be arranged but you do have to have the full support of your midwife and doctor. It is still a postcode lottery as to whether there will be the support available to go down this route. Many women are persuaded against, it but it is your choice, equipment can be hired to make the whole process more comfortable and of course it will give you flexibility if you have other children to consider, they can certainly be more involved almost as soon as there little brother or sister is born.

There can be complications in child birth and it is useful to know what to expect and what could go wrong so that you don’t panic if it happens, if you are like me and wanted to know absolutely everything then there are some brilliant Pregnancy books on the market, prices vary but read the reviews and pick something that is practical and informative.

Friends will no doubt tell you their horror stories, but I had five children , two of them were just about on time, one was 2 weeks late one two weeks early and another 6 weeks early, so it doesn’t follow that they will all be the same. Each childbirth experience was different and unique.
