Hair Straighteners

There are a large selection of hair straighteners available from a number of manufacturers so where do you start when you want to buy some for yourself or for a present?

Firstly your hair type, is your hair fine, medium or course and what condition is it in?

Fine hair will need straighteners with a lower temperature of 100-120 degrees, medium hair 140-160 degrees and thick course hair 180 to 200 degrees. Your hair condition also has to be taken into consideration. If your hair is not in good condition then you will either need to use straighteners with a lower temperature or ones with new technology to help eliminate damage.

How often will you want to use your straighteners?

Lower priced products tend to have metal plates which are fine for infrequent use but if you intend to use your straighteners more than a couple of times a week or your hair is damaged then you would need to use a product with ceramic plates.

Straighteners give better results at temperatures of 180 degrees and above but you need to be careful that you do not dry out your hair. You can prevent this by using protective products or by investing in a product with new technology such as infra red which can help seal in the moisture and helps prevent your hair drying out.

The best products will have temperature control that will give you flexibility. The width of the paddle will depend on the length of your hair but the thinner padels will give you more control. They give you the ability to curl and style your hair in addition to straightening it. Some of the products come in funky colours too so they are great as presents.
