Toning

Toning is the next stage in the Great Skin Care Process. Once you've got rid of all the muck and dirt from your skin, you need to keep those pores in shape.

Pores are the means by which the skin absorbs and expels water, chemicals, and anything else that comes into contact with it. Pores are different with everyone: some have bigger pores and some have smaller pores. It makes little difference skin-wise - the only thing you have to keep in mind is that the tighter your pores are, the smoother your skin feels.

That's where toners come in. After the warmth of your shower or bath, all your pores - especially your facial ones - have relaxed and opened. Toners close them up again, keeping your skin firmer and locking away precious moisture before it can escape.

Toners can often be a bit daunting, not least because they traditionally look and smell like nail varnish remover. The prospect of dabbing something so astringent on your face isn't so appealing. Yet despite their interesting scent, toners are in fact relatively gentle, and leave your skin feeling younger and refreshed. Perfect.

They should be treated in much the same way as cleansers and scrubs, in that certain toners will be designed for young, old, oily, dry or combination skin. They can also come in the form of lotions or clear liquids. Most products on the market today are pH balanced and alcohol-free, meaning you're not putting unnecessary chemicals onto your skin and are less likely to suffer a reaction - unless you're that type.
