Vitiligo

Caused by a lack of melanocyte cells which colour the skin, this condition causes pale white patches to appear on the skin, although they can appear anywhere on the body they are usually more noticeable on areas exposed to the sun such as the face, hands arms and legs. Vitiligo is not infectious.

50 % of cases appear before the age of 20 and affects both men and women of any colour. On the scalp vitiligo can cause the hair to turn white.

The cause of the condition may be a number of things but more commonly it may one of a number as reason, some of the most common being:

The immune system is not working properly and melanocyte cells are attacked.

The skin may have been damaged by the sun.

The skin may have come in to contact with harmful chemicals.

As a result of an over active thyroid gland.

Treatment

Consult a doctor to diagnose the condition. It is important that the treatment is supervised; non prescription creams can contain harmful chemicals which may cause further damage to the skin.

To control the spread and to restore skin colour treatments are available on prescription can include:

Steroid creams

Ultraviolet light

Covering creams which can help conceal the patches
